CIJF responds to human rights abuses in detention centers

Last August, NPR published this story about the wide-spread abuse of immigrants in US detention centers. The government's own investigators described “barbaric” and “negligent” conditions.

CIJF has learned of a detained immigrant who has twice been sexually assaulted by detention center guards. He had been issued a deportation order, but pro bono attorneys stepped in to win a temporary stay of deportation.

Thanks to our amazing donors, CIJf was able to provide the funding needed to re-open the case and advocate for his release from detention.

$10,000 matching gift & Colorado Gives Day!

Thus far In 2023, we have funded the legal services for more than 30 asylum cases for immigrants in Colorado and California.

We have also provided funding to lay the groundwork for legal services in underserved areas of Louisiana – where roughly 20% of all detained asylum seekers in this country are imprisoned.

In support of this work, a generous friend has committed to match year-end donations - up to $10,000.

End of year giving can be further boosted by donating to CIJF via the Colorado Gives Day website. Donations made in this manner are supplemented by the Community First Foundation’s $1 million matching incentive.

Many thanks to all of our partners in this work; we appreciate you!

With hope and gratitude,
Greg Mortimer, on behalf of the Colorado Immigrant Justice Fund team
