CIJF funds asylum case for Venezuelan family
Denver has experienced a recent influx of migrants - over 4,000 migrants arrived in December and January.
We learned about the “Mendoza” family (not their real name) that was staying at a shelter provided by Denver Community Church. The Mendoza’s had fled the chaos in Venezuela and eventually found their way to Denver. Upon their arrival, they knew no one in this country, and their two older children had not been able to attend school for over 2 years.
After reviewing their background, we believe that they have a legitimate asylum claim, so we hired a trusted attorney to represent them in immigration court.
As always, we are grateful for the generosity of our donors to be able to do this!
CIJF partners with local nonprofits
While our primary focus has always been on providing legal services for immigrants in detention, we have also felt compelled to join other local nonprofits in welcoming migrants to Denver.
We recently became part of a new coalition of immigrant legal services providers called the Denver Migrant Legal Services Group, and we are exploring options to scale legal services to a growing number of recently-arrived migrants.
CIJF has helped to coordinate legal services orientations in local shelters, and we are discussing options to do more. We’ll be in touch as we finalize more of the details.
With hope and gratitude,
Greg Mortimer, on behalf of the Colorado Immigrant Justice Fund team
