Assisting Afghans in hiding
A friend and donor of the Colorado Immigrant Justice Fund is providing pro bono legal services for 6 Afghans who worked with the US during the war and were among thousands left behind during the evacuation. These vulnerable folks are now in hiding and attempting to flee their country.
One of the many needs for funds is for humanitarian parole application fees, which are $575 per person. Because of the generosity of our donors, we have covered the cost for 2 application fees for a total of $1,150.
There is no guarantee that these Afghans in hiding will be able to successfully flee their country, but covering the cost of the application fees provides a ray of hope for people whose lives are in extreme danger.
A Mali teenager wins his freedom
“AKB” and his family were part of a minority tribe in the west African country of Mali. A majority tribe burned AKB’s village to the ground, killing all of his family. Afterwards, he set out on a trip to the US with his uncle, who was killed by robbers in Panama.
By the time AKB arrived in the US at the age of 17, he was completely alone and was placed in a detention center. With funding from the CIJF, an attorney helped AKB win asylum in September 2021, and he has been adopted by a family in California. Today, he is studying to become a mechanic.
While he lost his birth family, he has been welcomed with open arms by his new American family.
Can you help us help more asylum seekers?
During our first year in existence, the Colorado Immigrant Justice Fund provided legal services for 9 immigrants who won asylum, in addition to legal consultations for over 100 immigrants in Louisiana.
If 250 folks are willing to give $20/month, we can double our capacity to serve immigrants this coming year. If you would like to join our efforts, you can donate here.
With hope and gratitude,
