“Abdi” from Ethiopia wins asylum!

Because “Abdi’s” father had worked for a previous Ethiopian regime, Abdi was arrested, incarcerated and tortured for over a year before he finally escaped.

Against long odds, Abdi was able to flee to the United States, where he was placed in an immigrant prison in California. CIJF provided the funds for immigration attorney Elizabeth Lopez to take up his asylum case.

Thanks to Elizabeth’s good work, Abdi recently won asylum!

College students advocate for asylum seekers

As part of their course work, students from the University of Denver and the University of Colorado have been visiting immigrants in the Aurora, Colorado detention center.

Several of these students have become passionate advocates on behalf of Venezuelan asylum seekers they have met in detention. The students have asked CIJF to fund the asylum cases for three immigrants, and have offered to help fundraise on behalf of their detained friends.

CIJF has funded one of the cases and will likely fund the other two as well.

We appreciate the students, as they inspire us to remain focused on this work!

With hope and gratitude,
Greg Mortimer, on behalf of the Colorado Immigrant Justice Fund team
